When I joined La Sacra and held my first meetings with Laura Bonomelli a couple of years ago, we agreed that we needed to revise our approach to the subject of art. We decided to treat it as a subject focused on skill development and artistic appreciation, starting in Primary School, rather than simply a lesson in crafting items. Our goal is to help students understand the techniques behind art, the importance of creativity, and to foster both their skills and passion for self-expression, as well as their appreciation for artworks.

As part of this new approach, each year students will practice drawing and painting with different techniques, while also engaging with artworks in the stunning setting of our Incoronata church and cloister. One aspect that our students particularly enjoy is studying famous works of art. Each year, they replicate a renowned artwork, providing them with the opportunity to connect with art history while honing their skills. In Year 1, students will explore the world of Alexander Calder’s abstract sculptures. In Year 2, they will delve into Pablo Picasso and Cubism. Year 3 will focus on the abstract expressionism of Jackson Pollock, while Year 4 students will tackle Hokusai’s The Great Wave off Kanagawa. Finally, Year 5 students will bring Vincent van Gogh’s The Starry Night to life.

We’re thrilled to see how these incredible pieces will be shaped by the hands of our talented students. I hope many of you have already heard about this exciting project and will soon have the chance to view these stunning works on display around the school!
