Recognizing colors and identifying color names is an important part of a child’s cognitive development.
It helps children communicate better by learning to describe and categorize the things around them.
Our little bunnies in the green SBS class get the chance to discover new colors every couple of weeks. Our preschoolers get a surprise visit from the “color truck” ; it brings each of them a bracelet of the new color they’ll be learning about. They get to have a color hunt and explore the classroom to find and sort different toys and items to add into our “color basket.” We then name all the different items they find and use them to play games like “what’s missing” or “run and touch.” This not only to help the children memorize and recognize colors but the names of the different objects associated to these.
Our little ones also have the role of searching their house for items in the same color and adding them to our “color basket” at school. This is a great way for them to share between home and school how much they’re learning while playing and exploring. It is also an opportunity to get them critically thinking along with improving and enriching their vocabulary.
Lately, with the fair weather, we’ve taken our “color hunt” outdoor and that is something the children have really enjoyed. We are really looking forward to the possibility to get out more with the changing season and to give our little ones the opportunity to keep learning colors while exploring nature.
Every moment is golden for talking about colors in the world around us and it’s one of the easiest ways children begin to learn and identify colors. Simply chatting about the colors that are seen around us, can help children’s ability to communicate and express themselves, to learn and engage in conversations about early concepts while reading, playing, eating. After all, colors are everywhere!
