In February, students from 4c embarked on a project on eco-houses during their literacy lessons. An eco-house is a home with ecological features, that aims to be as environmentally friendly as possible. In class, pupils learned that eco-houses are made of sustainable materials and that owners often install solar panels to provide energy. Then, to bring the reading comprehension to life, students designed and built their own interpretation of an eco-house at home. A lot of thought, effort and passion went into these models with incredible results. There were a lot of proud faces when the day came to bring the models to school, and a lot of curiosity to see what the others had created at home.
The second step of the project was to make a short video, describing and explaining the various features of the houses. The video was an activation of the vocabulary and grammar that the children had been studying in class. Students carefully explained that there were sheep in the garden to cut the grass and that there were orchards and vegetable gardens so that the owners could grow their own food. After a lot of practice in class, the confidence with which pupils used the new language was apparent. When asked if they were proud of their projects, the answer was an overwhelming yes. One student thoughtfully added that he enjoyed projects, especially in literacy class. ‘It helps me remember,’ he explained, ‘Now when I think of my eco-house, I remember many things.’Overall, a clear thumbs up for project-based learning from year 4. We can’t wait to show you our next project!
