This new year has seen the launch of our ‘Biscuits and Books’ project. Children have been incredibly enthusiastic about their new class library. Each grade has their own bookcase with a fantastic mix of fiction and non-fiction. Once a month, the children go to the school library to drink a cup of tea, eat biscuits and discuss their books with their classmates.
As part of the literacy programme’s focus on ‘Talk for Writing,’ the children complete a worksheet mapping ‘the Story Mountain.’ This useful scheme helps them to break down a story into its fundamental parts of ‘opening,’ ‘problem,’ ‘resolution’ and ‘ending.’ This acts as a visual prompt for retelling the story. During the monthly meetings, children can work on their storytelling skills as they recount their books to their classmates. At the same time, they have the opportunity to swap recommendations and give opinions on what they have read.
Feedback from the children has so far been extremely positive. One year 4 student commented: “Biscuits and Books is a moment when you relax, you eat and you learn better by reading.” Another said: “This project is interesting and you can share the stories.” When asked if they are hoping to win one of the illustrious Sacra Famiglia Bookworm badges, the answer is a resounding ‘Yes, I’m going for gold!’ Happy reading everyone!
